To meet broad-ranging mid-century climate goals,
it will be necessary to put key measures in place
globally to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
For the aviation sector, achieving net-zero emissions
by 2050, a target that industry and governments
are increasingly aligning with, will require careful
planning and decisive action by all stakeholders.
There is no silver bullet and success will come
from a combination of new technologies and
processes. Most technical projections forecast a
number of different solutions across the sector
by 2050, with shorter flights increasingly reliant
on the development of electric and hydrogen
technologies. Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF)
will continue to be indispensable through at
least the medium term, especially for medium and
long-haul flights, which together account
for the bulk of CO2 emissions from aviation.
