Africa’s economic performance has been encouraging over the last couple
of decades. The continent’s economic growth was above the global
average for most of the 2000s and poverty declined significantly. Africa is
also modernizing as urbanization increases, a middle class emerges, and
the digital economy opens new windows of opportunity. At this juncture,
it is crucial to determine how these positive trends can be leveraged
to further reduce poverty and generate better quality jobs for the continent’s
fast-growing working-age population.
